2019 Cheongju Craft Biennale Announces Cheongju International Craft Competition: Rewards from the two competition values at 1.4 million KRW, Online Application opens from May 1 – 31, 2019

The Cheongju International Craft Competition, which was suspended during the 2017 Cheongju Craft Biennale, will come back through the 11th Cheongju Craft Biennale in autumn 2019.

Cheongju Craft Biennale (Chairperson of the organizing committee: Cheongju’s mayor Han-Beom-Deok) announced that it will accept applications for 2019 Cheongju Craft Biennale-Cheongju International Craft Competition from May 1 – 31, 2019, with the aim of discovering outstanding craft artists around the globe.

With total rewards of 1.4 million KRW, the competition consists of two parts:

Craft Competition – a competition of craftworks, similar to previous competitions
Craft City Lab Competition – a competition of ideas on how to transform Cheongju as the city of arts and craft.
For Craft Competition, there will be no limitations on the topic or genre; artists of all ages and nationality can participate as an individual or a team. Applications will first be reviewed online, then in-person. Finally, winners will be announced in September and will be exhibited during 2019 Cheongju Craft Biennale.

For Craft City Lab Competition, manuscripts on the topic of Cheongju’s potential to grow as the capital city of arts and craft will be reviewed. The winners will be announced in June of 2019 and the manuscript will be published as prints before the opening of Cheongju Craft Biennale.

“The craft world felt sorry that the craft competition, a tradition of Cheongju Craft Biennale, was not held last year. We hope that international and Korean craft artists will participate in the competition this year to freely express their talents with equal opportunities,” said a Cheongju Craft Biennale representative.

Detailed information of 2019 Cheongju Craft Biennale-International Craft Competition is available on the official homepage of the Biennale; for questions, email [email protected].

Moreover, Cheongju Craft Biennale is continuing to raise awareness of Cheongju’s crafts through international exhibitions including the upcoming exhibition at Korean Cultural Centre Australia (Ground Level, 255 Elizabeth St Sydney NSW 2000), which opens on Feb.8th, 2019.
