IonQ’s latest DARPA award is more significant than the headline $28 million suggests. The company has secured $28 million to advance manufacturing and deliver 25 Evergreen-05 optical atomic clocks, with another $30 million option that could fund 100 additional units. If exercised, the program reaches $58 million and 125 clocks.
The strategic value is arguably greater than the contract value. Evergreen-05 is a compact optical atomic clock designed for radar, secure communications and precision positioning, delivering 50-femtosecond timing stability at one second and extremely low long-term drift. At roughly 5 liters, IonQ says it delivers comparable long-term performance to active hydrogen masers in a fraction of the volume, opening applications where size, weight and ruggedness matter.
The technology also gives IonQ a bridge from quantum computing into quantum sensing and positioning, navigation and timing. That becomes particularly interesting following its October 2025 acquisition of Vector Atomic, the company that originally developed the clock technology with DARPA support beginning in 2019.
IonQ is putting real capital behind the opportunity as well, committing $15 million to dedicated production space, manufacturing and testing equipment, and personnel. That suggests this isn’t simply a research contract; DARPA is helping push the technology toward repeatable production.
For investors, the bigger takeaway is diversification. IonQ is increasingly building a portfolio around quantum computing, networking and sensing rather than relying on a single quantum-computing roadmap. Defense applications such as precision timing and navigation could become an important commercial market—and potentially a much more tangible near-term revenue opportunity than fault-tolerant quantum computing.
The $58 million potential contract won’t transform IonQ’s financials by itself. But 125 deployable optical clocks, a dedicated production investment and continued DARPA backing provide another piece of evidence that IonQ’s quantum technology portfolio is moving from laboratory development toward real-world deployment.
